I thought you get one from preordering and one from signing up for the shift thing in the extras menu? So then why do I have 4 keys?

I've heard some people are getting extras when signing up for Shift. One guy said he got like 30.

I guess I need to sign up for Shift then. I ignored that the first time I booted up Borderlands 2.

Theres dupe tricks out there to get a ton of them.

Not that I condone or used them myself. I just have 2.

There's a golden chest in one of the towns in the game. It can only be opened up by those golden keys. The chest contains rare items. After you get your item, it reseals shut, with new items. But you need another key to open it. I got a good gun from it. Tho I ended up opening it up early, and I have now already sold that weapon for a much better weapon. I am almost 10 levels higher than when I first opened that chest. Tho I haven't come across another golden key. Haven't really been looking. But I haven't come across one either.

I signed up for Shift in-game yesterday, and I didn't get any golden keys. I hope it'll show up the next time I boot up the game though.

I have 2 golden keys.  Have yet to use them.  So do you guys think you should level up a decent amount before even opening the chest?

While I haven't played Borderlands 2, if the item that comes out of the chest scales with your level I'd say wait.

There was a similar mechanic in Diablo 2 where you gave an enchanter a common weapon and they made it rare. If you did it right then, you'd probably replace it in the next act or the one after, but if you waited and brought back say an act 5 weapon it was well worth the wait.

As long as you don't get hung up needing a new weapon, I'd say wait.

the game glitched out on me and a couple dudes last night. we got the the gold chest in Sanctuary to open unlimited times.. gathered some major cash and got a few awesome shot guns and snipers.. just gotta wait til im 17 to use them.

wasted my key, never even noticed that it was a special container and ended up with two so so sniper rifles

It doesn't really matter. There is always a chance you get some awful grenade mods or something when opening the chest anyway.

I was reading that on the PC version, you could modify one of the installation files to allow you to get up to 255 golden keys to start the game with. Tho, the article went on to say that they have since patched it. But if you still have the unpatched version, I'm sure you could still do it.

Have 2 myself and holding on to them. Really was tempted when I needed a flame weapon for a mission and I couldn't find one anywhere, in either the vending machines or drops. I finally did find one in the vending machine so I held off.
